Hugs vs. Handshakes

1 Jul

Usually I’m not much of a hugger, but I’ve found a small problem with that working with interns. I take them under my wing, show them the ropes and they are usually here for about three months. We go to lunch together, talk shop and become Facebook friends.

Then, their internship is up, time to say goodbye. Usually, its been a great experience getting to know each of them and they are thankful for the opportunity. Hug or handshake?

Though I’ve been examining, the professional situation, recently I encountered it personally with a reunion of long-lost relatives. Upon first meeting a second or third cousin, who is now in their 20s or 30s, the obvious course of action is a handshake upon introducing. Now you’ve spent the afternoon with this person, getting to know them, bonding over your favorite things like best friends. Then, its time to say farewell til next time. Do you go for the hug or the handshake? Or the hug with the kiss on the cheek, which Northerners are fond of?

I’m curious to know your thoughts 🙂

You must reach deep inside to find the true answer, and go with it. There is no consistent answer, i think its all situational. And hey if you wanna kiss em on the check then do it!!! lol sorry i had too.
